Your blog has really helped me through my own toe shortening/straightening surgery. I was apprehensive and nervous at first, but after reading your follow up stories it help calm my nerves.
I do have a question though. How long after your sugary did you begin wearing "normal" shoes. I am five weeks in and my doctor says I can begin wearing flat, non flexible (which means unfashionable) walking shoes. Did you have this same transition, or did you wear an athletic shoe for a while? Also, how long before you were comfortable wearing heals? My toes are still pretty week and when I stand on my tip toes or put pressure on them they feel pretty sore.
Thanks for the blog, wish i'd found it before my surgery on my second toe - the results have been such a disspaointment.
It's three years later and the toe is still in constant pain - it doesnt lie flat, there is a throbbing sensation and it kills when I walk on it (which I have to do as a watiress).
I have been back to my podiatrist eight times and just discovered the pin had not dissolved, but he cant be sure that's what is causing the pain. The next step is deadening the nerves in the toe completely - which I am scared to do. Maybe I should go to an ortho? I thought I had a great dr. but the fact that he is not concerned about why the pin hasnt dissolved after 3 yrs and can't seem to be able to unerstand why I'm still in so much pain leads me to believe he isn't so great. SHould I get the pin removed or just find another podiatrist, or go to an ortho? Help!

Jasmin- I am glad you are considering this procedure because I am very happy that i chose do go through with it. It is a major surgery and can be scary. Today, November, 2, 2010, my toes feel good. The thing i dislike is how i do not have the full motion to bend the toes. I recommend after this procedure to go see a physical therapist. Comment back to see if you went through with the surgery!

Quynh- Thank you for commenting! I am very happy with my surgery and I hope you found a Doctor who can do this procedure for you! I am not sure how much 1 toe would cost hopefully you found a Dr. near your location so you can ask him! If you are still wondering, I can always ask my doctor for an estimate!

I visited with my podiatrist yesterday and discussed hammertoe surgery for the 2nd toe on each foot. I had him point on the x-ray to where he would make the breaks to shorten the toes. The break points were above and below the first joint after the toe attaches to the foot. They remove the joint and fuse the bones. I would have a permanent "stiffness" because the joint isn't there with the resultant reduced range of motion. Not sure that is such a big deal for a toe. Would be way significant in a finger. Don't know if they are all done this way but maybe that is why you don't have the full motion.

Thank you for commenting. Walking 2-3 months after the surgery was scary because i started school and walking across campus was new to me. However, there was no pain involved. I was just very cautious about my new feet and made sure no one was too close. I walk normal today- I can run and exercise like I used to with no problem. I want to estimate a good 4-5 months post surgery before i could dance again (dance was my exercise) Hope I answered your questions! If you have anymore, please let me know.
